Tangent Clavier

a rubber tangent pins each string to an anvil; two magnetic pickups hear the twang

Slow motion · C4

The key's last strike, simulated: the tangent carries the string onto the anvil, the speaking length rings against it, and on release the whole string, yarn and all, swings free. Height exaggerated.

Pickup comb

Each pickup hears partial n in proportion to sin(nπx/L): partials with a node over a pole vanish. The switches add the two pickups, or subtract them to cancel what they share.

Spectrum

live output · markers: held partials, and (faint) the released string's
Partials run sharp of the faint harmonic grid in the bass (stiffness); press harder and they all shift up together.

Spectrogram

live output · ticks: the spectrum's markers
A struck string is brightest at once and darkens as its upper partials die; let the key go and the yarn chokes every line together. Lean on a held key and they all bend up.
