steel tines plucked by the thumbs over a wooden box

The tine of C4

The steel tine side on, in slow motion: clamped at the left, resting on the bridge, free at the tip. The part behind the bridge moves too, and how long it is sets the overtones. The bright overtones die within moments, leaving the fundamental's slow swing.

The box

How much sound the box makes per newton on the bridge at each frequency (dB), with the tine's modes as bars. The low hump is the air bouncing in the sound hole, the next the top's first mode. Cover the hole (the mod wheel) and watch the air's hump slide down and vanish.

Each pluck starts with a bright, out-of-tune overtone about five and a half times the note, which fades in a fraction of a second; the fundamental rings on. With the caps on, loud notes add a burst of rattle high up.
